| Common Questions
What is your shooting style?
I shoot documentary style wedding photography. I approach weddings in the same manner I approach many of my newspaper and magazine assignments. My job is to make compelling photographs that capture the feeling of the wedding. My goal is to tell the story of your day with photographs.
Do you shoot formal posed photographs?
Yes. Most weddings I typically take 6-8 groupings of formal photographs. I normally shoot the formal photographs before the ceremony. A few weeks prior to the wedding day, I will have a consultation with the bride and groom to discuss the “shot list” which includes the formals and any other photo requests. We will also discuss the schedule of the day based on “shot list” just to make sure things go smoothly on the big day.
Do you shoot digitally or with film?
I shoot digital photographs using Nikon cameras. Today’s digital technology is spectacular. You have more control over the look of the final prints than with film and it offers more opportunity to share your pictures online.
Do you shoot color or black and white?
I shoot all color files but then convert some of the pictures into black and white or sepia. Certain situations lend themselves better to either color or black and white. If the bride and groom prefer more black and white photos, I will take that into consideration when editing pictures for the album.
Do you work with an assistant?
I almost always have second photographer with me. I only work with experienced photographers, not assistants or apprentices. I want to know I can trust the second shooter. It makes my job less stressful and makes for much better pictures!
How long do you stay?
A typical wedding day usually lasts around 4-8 hours. We’ll agree on a time during the pre-wedding consultation. But, I’m usually flexible. I know things often don’t run right on schedule. I leave when I know I have enough good pictures to capture the day's events. Usually this means staying for at least the first few dances at the reception. Before I leave, I always check with the bride and groom to make sure they aren’t any last requests.
Are you willing to travel?
You bet. I've shot weddings all over Minnesota and Wisconsin. And I would never turn down an opportunity to jet off to fun and exotic places like the Caribbean, Europe or even Asia!
What about purchasing prints? Can we make prints ourselves?
For every wedding I create a beautiful album with about 200-250 4x6 photographs along with a CD that contains the same images as they appear in the album. If you order prints through me you’ll get images printed professionally on archival paper and guaranteed quality. Otherwise you can make prints yourselves at any photo counter such as Sam’s Club, Walmart, Target, Walgreens. I find the CD gives couples the flexibility to get prints made on their own which helps them save money. My goal is to make sure my clients are happy with their pictures and that the price is affordable.
How long does it take to get the album back after the wedding?
Typically about 4-6 weeks.
Can we set up a meeting before we book you?
Absolutely. I’m happy to meet you and show you my work and answer any other questions you might have. We can also discuss your expectations and the kinds of photographs you would like to see from your wedding. I always encourage couples to find a photographer they trust and feel comfortable with. Your wedding is one of the biggest days of your life and I know how important it is to have amazing photographs.
